The AITUC-led Kerala Kasu Andi Thozhilali Council has urged the government not to grant licence for new cashew factories. In a statement in Kollan on Thursday, Council general secretary A.Fazaludeen Huck said about 3 lakh workers are employed in the cashew sector in more than 850 factories. The production of indigenous raw nuts has decreased and the industry is totally dependent on imported raw nuts. There is also shortage for expert workers in the shelling section. Despite all these, the cashew industrialists are exerting pressure on the government to grant licences to new factories.
